Course Description

The participants will have the opportunity to explore the scientific research process and academic practices based on the example of evolutionary biology, a field of natural sciences chosen for its ethical & conceptual implications. We will address scientific topics such as the evolution of behaviour (cooperation, violence, sex, signalling, language) and the evolutionary transitions in the organization of life (cells, organisms, populations, ecosystems). Based on the example of evolutionary biology, we will question the practice of scientists in all fields of natural sciences. We will present how knowledge is produced and outline the limits of science. With a methodology rooted in science studies, we will analyse the values and norms that shape relationships and practices of the research communities. We will discuss the socio-political issues that affect science and its relationships to industry and the media.
