Course Description

Over the past century, fundraising has had a profound impact on the cultural sector. Most cultural institutions – whether public or private- now have a professional fundraising department and actively court donors. The use of crowdfunding by volunteers and non-profits influences the way citizens engage with culture. Even countries with a strong tradition of public funding now rely more and more on the generosity of the private sector to develop new cultural projects and keep existing ones running. Philanthropic actions of individuals and companies have become a central part of the cultural field and understanding them is now key for anyone wishing to work in that sector. As well as surveying the historic, legal and strategic aspects of cultural philanthropy, this course aims at helping students experiment with the fundamentals of fundraising through multiple examples and case studies.
