More than a pre-requisite, an appetite for the African continent: history, geography, politics, economy, and sociology. It is a history class but with a lot of multidisciplinary approaches.

Course Description

The course deals with education policies and the role of education in the development of African societies during the 19th and 20th centuries. Indigenous knowledge and learning systems will be related to formal and structured education systems. The role of colonial powers, international organizations in African societies will be discussed. The question of gender, opportunities, religions regarding education will be analyzed. We will consider a varierty of case-studies to go deeper into analysis and cover all regions of the African continent. Primary sources as curriculum, reports, time schedule will be analyzed.

Course validation

1) Oral presentation (20%) : One or two students will be responsible for leading the section in a general discussion about one specific topic assigned during the first session of the class. They will present the statement of the subject of the week, making connections with assigned readings and information from previous readings and lectures from class. Each student's presentation should be about 10 minutes in length, and accompanied by one or two pages outline. If more than one student is assigned to a presentation, their presentation should be about 15 minutes. All grades are based on individual performances, not by the group as a whole. The presentation will be followed by a discussion section/debates lead by the students. Student(s) will have to send the Sunday before the class the powerpoint presentation to me per email. After the presentation, one or two students in the audience will have to give an immediate feedback on the presentation – this short presentation will count in the final grade of the oral presentation. 2) In-Class Exams Midterm (30%) : These exam will take place in class during week 7 for two hours. You will have the choice between two different subjects related to previous readings and lectures from class. 3) Attendance and Class participation (10%) : It is essential that you attend each class meeting. Habitual absences, whether excused or unexcused, will negatively affect your final grade. In addition, informed participation in class discussions is a must. It is expected that you will attend each class and contribute meaningfully to class discussions as evidence of apprehension and comprehension of the materials. 4) Research paper (30%) : The term paper, due on Monday May 7, should be based on available primary and secondary sources. Each group of students (2 max.) must hand in a thesis statement and a bibliography. Final papers should be at least 5,000 words (+/- 10%) excluding footnotes, and bibliography. 5) Quizzes (10%) : Two or three short quizzes about what you learn in class and readings during the semester.
