Course Description

The plurality of mediums in our hands offers a scope of eventualities that add to the creative arts. Pictorial creativity crystallizes under diverse installations and organized figures in space. Thus, within their materiality and functionalities, the status of art across the exploration of its techniques takes a place that ties many different mediums and creative forms more than ever before. It is essential to place teaching within precise theoretical, historical and multi-cultural contexts to contribute to the construction of ideas and concepts. It is equally necessary to explore the reality of the artistic, cultural and political landscape to allow open and able attitudes. While studying and working, each gesture is the occasion of thoughts about its meaning, acquiring technical connoisseurship and consciousness of theoretical implications. The acquisition of techniques before all act of creation is not pertinent and techniques to be acquired will need to come as a solution to a personal problematic and should be taught along this constructive process. Therefore, the notion of invention is intimately tied to the notion of discovering and learning. Being creative implies a long process of implementation. The work of the art student, the artist, can be identified with the one of a scientist, a researcher, exploring minutely the hidden capacities of materials and tools it manipulates and the processes it builds. From photographic images gathered or personal, each student will start copying, composing and painting from and with these images, The works will be happening on large sheets of paper. Each student will be free to work against the wall or the floor. With brushes, or without, with rags as well as with their own hands. These different approaches emphasize other perspectives towards the making of painting. Modern and Contemporary painting have questioned the classical academic approach of the medium by radically changing its ways and imposed techniques from the 19th century. Each student will be allowed to engage its own project and I will be linking each approach to examples of work and concepts active or historic today in contemporary art. The different approach of painting proposed here, allows a new place of understanding towards contemporary painting and further more with contemporary art.
