Course Description

We live in a world of information and this information often takes forms of digital databases. This course presents simple methods to analyze small and middle-sized databases. Using simple statistics and graphical representation, I will present tools aimed at extracting hidden information from data and going beyond the simple mean. Even though no complex knowledge in statistics is required to attend this course, it will provide all the necessary knowledge to analyze correlations, data trends and to make simple forecasts. The course takes place in front of a computer and it will make an intensive uses of Microsoft Excel. This course is also an excellent opportunity to improve Excel skills.

Course validation

The course will be assessed via one homework assignment accounting for 30% of the final grade and a 2-hour final examination in front of the computers accounting for 60% of the final grade. 10% of the final grade is dedicated to class participation. Homework assignment could be done by group of 3 students. Students are permitted to bring everything they want for final exam.
