Course Description

The course aims to give students a background in Asia's interactions with the rest of the world prior to the 19th century. It is a global history course that takes Asia at its focus but emphasizes its connections with other parts of the world. The roughly three-hundred-year period that we will cover is significant because we can see the dominance of Asian countries in global trade and eventually their demise at the eve of the 19th century at which point the tides seem to have clearly turned in favor of Europe. Themes to be covered will include: trade and commodities, empire, globalization, and modernity. We will focus mostly on China, India and Japan, but we will also discuss Southeast Asia, Korea and the Middle East. We will begin with an introduction on what inter-Asian interactions looked like prior to the arrival of Europeans via sea routes. Vasco da Gama's discovery of a maritime route to Asia and end with the British mission to China known as the Macartney Mission. The two events encompass the changing relationship and power dynamics between Europe and Asia. The course will also introduce students to the use of material and visual sources for historical inquiry. We will visit the Musée Guimet in Paris together to see how historical narratives can be created with such sources. Each week students will present on material or visual objects that pertain to the particular theme of the week and at the end of a course we will create an exhibition together for the rest of the campus, displaying the history of Asia in the period covered in class. In addition, students will also be expected to write individual research papers on a topic of their choosing, but in consultation with me. This assignment is an opportunity for students to improve their English essay-writing skills. Students will turn in a draft of the paper that will be workshopped in class.
