Course Description

Since the XVIIIth century, British women have emerged in British literature and among them, the Brontë sisters have played a major part. This course offers a comparative study of Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) and Wild Saragasso Sea by Jean Rhys (1890-1979) - a novel that was directly inspired by a feminine character in Jane Eyre. The course will be based on comparative studies of extracts and it will discuss the complex images of women in British literature. The last four courses will be devoted to movies adapted from the two novels.
