Course Description

Gothic literature uses recurrent motifs that are variously treated according to writers. This course offers a comparative literary study focused on Gothic literature. It will be based on radically different texts: Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and a parody of Gothic novels, Nothanger Abbey, by Jane Austen (1775-1817). On the one hand, Amercian short stories written by a man, on the other hand a British novel, published posthumously, written by a British female novelist whose accurate observations put into question the rules of her time. The course will be based on comparative studies of extracts and the four last courses will be devoted to studies of movies adapted from these works.
