Course Description

This workshop prepares non-management students at the second-year undergraduate level to work with, and develop relationships with the press and other parties. It uses written and oral exercises, plus a video camera, to help participants master efficient ways to communicate, both externally and internally. Theoretical sessions examine communications and communications techniques, what drives print, broadcast and online journalists, how they work and what their rights and responsibilities are. Practical sessions include three exercises where students must play roles. In the first, each participant presents someone to the class. In the second, students in groups must write and present a communications document, such as a press release or business plan. A final simulation in crisis management is also done in groups; participants play senior management of a firm where something has gone wrong and must meet the press to take questions. These exercises are all filmed and the tapes studied for ways to improve presentation skills, message discipline, crowd control, use of voice, body language. After every exercise, the class comments and offers feedback on how well students have communicated.
