Basic knowledge on the European Union

Course Description

The energy sector was at the heart of the European project 60 years ago. Yet for decades there was no real European energy policy and each Member State developed its own rules and networks. How has the situation evolved? What is the state of play today on energy markets, in terms of own resources and external dependency and in the functioning of the European market? What progress since the start of the opening of electricity and gas markets in 1996, which are still their shortcomings? How did the geopolitical situation give rise to new developments in energy security and what more is needed? How did the climate preoccupations reorient action since 2007, in particular in the fields of renewables and energy efficiency? How does Europe protect its consumers? What does it do to develop the technologies of the future? How did the project of an Energy Union come around, how will it support the energy transition in Europe and transform its energy system?
