Pre-requisite

No prior background knowledge in global public health related matters is required. However, interest in international relations and global governance is necessary.

Course Description

Normative approaches are at the heart of current global health governance. This course will provide an overview of the role of international law and institutions in global public health. Following an introduction into contemporary challenges in global health governance and to the role of law in this context, each session will be dedicated to a specific issue of global health law. The themes that will be covered include the normative role of the World Health Organization and the competing norm-making activities of other global actors, global health law instruments and policies such as non-communicable diseases, access to medicines, global health security, as well as human rights and the migration of health workers. The teaching methodology will combine lectures, case studies, and a simulation on the use of the International Health Regulations in the context of a global epidemic outbreak.

Pedagogical format

The teaching methodology will combine lectures, case studies, and a simulation on the use of the International Health Regulations in the context of a global epidemic outbreak.
