Course Description

This case study consists in the organisation of a week-long learning expedition in a specific U.S. innovation ecosystem or “tech hub” for a delegation of twenty French participants (including company executives, policy-experts, elected officials, researchers). Different student groups will focus on a specific U.S. ecosystem (Silicon Valley, New York, Boston, Los Angeles…). Each project will involve team work (collective research, presentations and papers) and individual assignments (written and oral). Tasks involved call upon a variety of analytical, project-management and interpersonal skills (research, writing, fundraising, building partnerships, event planning, administration, logistics, managing a selection process, conducting meetings, leading a group, building a communication strategy, evaluation and reporting). The ultimate goal of this case study will be for each group to deliver a detailed study tour program proposal tailored for a carefully selected delegation

Pedagogical format

The pedagogical format of each session will vary based on the week's agenda. These can range from lectures, student oral presentations, group workshops, simulations, role playing to informal class discussions. Occasional guest speakers will be invited to share their experience and expertise on specific topics.

Course validation

- Collective assignment (group written assignments and oral presentations throughout the semester) : 40% - Individual performance (written/oral assignments) : 50% - Ongoing participation : 10%

Workload

- The collective assignment will consist in a series of short written assignments and oral performances to be delivered by the group, in some cases by a designated spokesperson, throughout the semester. These assignments will involve team work and different types of exercises (documentary research, writing, oral presentations, deliberations, role playing, simulations). - The individual performance grade will assess a student's performance on an individual assignment which will take the form of a research paper (and possibly a complementary oral presentation). - The ongoing participation grade will reward student engagement and participation throughout the semester.
