Course Description

The emergence and spread of the use of ICTs has reshaped societies and with it the concepts of labour, production, community and political subjects. It has boosted new modes of social interactions and production, overcoming historical barriers such as space and time. In the meantime, traditional political institutions - designed within an industrial society – in decay seek to adopt mechanisms from the ICTs in an effort to fight the lack of confidence and so-called crisis of representation they face. This course aims to analyse how institutions and political actors are adopting ICTs and to understand whether this process consists of a revolution or of an "aggiornamento"? The class will address the main theoretical questions around Politics and Internet, and will analyse the main practical experimentations of ICT's and Politics in government, elections, public administration, social movements and social innovations.

Pedagogical format

The class will be based on the literature on the topic but also on concrete case studies. Most sessions will entail the presentation of a case study put in perspective with the theoretical debate. Some sessions will also be dedicated to debates with practitioners.

Course validation

Each student will be required during the semester to: • Do a 5-10 minute presentation on current events regarding ICTs and politics • Do a 10 minute presentation on a pre-determined topic • In groups write a 10-15 page essay on one of the theoretical debates or case studies covered during the class • Class participation will be strongly encouraged

Workload

Students will have to do the required readings for the each session and actively follow the evolutions of this fast evolving topic. The latter will be essential for their participation in class
