Course Description

This course will cover the concept of cultural diplomacy from both a historical and practical stand point. The first part of this course will cover the main actors in the field, whether they are governmental or non-governmental and allow a comparison between various strategies for instance in France, the US or China. The second part will allow the students to explore in a practical way how to conduct a cultural diplomacy in today's world. It will feature many case studies for instance practising how to imagine a cultural festival in a foreign country or how to build a strategy of teaching the french language around the world. At the end of the class, all students should be able to understand what is cultural diplomacy, what are its means and its objectives but also be able to take an active part in it. Here are some of the thematics that wil be tackled : Cultural Diplomacy in developing countries : objectives and results, Francophonie in a globalized world etc.

Pedagogical format

This course will include group work, interventions from external professionnals and lecture from the teacher. The first class will allow to distribute all the exercices among students.
