SOCIAL MEDIA SKILLS Gerald Holubowicz OBJECTIFS DU COURS / COURSE GOALS This course aims to prepare students to a rapidly-changing environment of the online sphere, with a focus ondinteractive tools that allow a better audience engagement. - How to deliver news via social media - Which social media match with your expertise - How to aggregate a community - How to interact with a specific audience - How to produce news on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram (timing, format, editing) - How to obtain influence on social media Descriptif du cours / Course description Session 1 : Introduction to the course – why should you use social media? Session 2 : Social Media in our ever changing news landscape Session 3 : New Challenges: Ethics, data protection, security and privacy Session 4 : One challenge: engaging the audience (empathy,virality, shareability) Session 5 : How journalists use twitter? (trend topics, #, meme, live, gifs) Session 6 : Fake news and rumors, how to check your information ? Session 7 : How journalists use facebook? (instant articles, live, videos, pages, groups) Session 8 : ChatBot creation for news (conversational interfaces) Session 9 : How journalists use Instagram? (an image is worth a 1000 words) Session 10 : Snapchat, stories and the news (news for millennials) Session 11 : How to measure success? Session 12 : Curated and aggregated news, how to do it well?

Modalités d'évaluation / Grading SOCIAL MEDIA SKILLS Gerald Holubowicz Each student will be given a grade and an individual comment, based on the following criteria : Points will be subtracted if you miss more than one class meeting, are chronically late, or repeatedly show inattention. Participation is expected. Quizzes : 15 pts Assignments : 20 pts Group projects : 15 pts Attendance & participation : 10 pts Assigned readings, links to videos, resources, etc., will be provided on a regular basis. Quizzes are based on the assigned readings in that same week.
