Course Description

Law in Europe is often conceived as institutional project – a mode of regulating a set of economic and social activities. Yet, it may also be seen as an existential project – a way to structure and generate modes of existence and modes of coexistence, a bundle of social practices and individual dispositions, a set of sentiments and beliefs. Why this dimension of law is not always acknowledged may have to do with the fact that this idea is still in search of its own methodology. The seminar will look for this: critical and innovative ways to approach Law ‘as a way of life'. This will be done by reviewing a series of contemporary theories and by linking these to case studies. Sessions: 1. European Integration Through Law and Life 2. European Law as a Way of Life 3. Law as Text – the Law and Literature approach 4. Law as Culture – Law as a Cultural System 5. Law as Practice – Law in Everyday Life 6. Law as Knowledge – Law as Constituting Society
