Course Description

This course introduces students to some of the major theoretical perspectives in the study of media and digital cultures. It will draw on key works in social sciences and media scholarship, in order to provide historical, sociological, and political perspective on issues such as: virality and social contagion, the economics of attention, participation and fan cultures, publics and counterpublics, new media and the culture industries, surveillance and privacy, media events and storytelling, the political dimensions of design etc.

Pedagogical format

24 hours: 12 sessions of 2 hours. Presentations, lectures and class discussions.

Course validation

Participation during class: 10%. Individual presentation: 40%. Final paper: 50%.
