Course Description

In the course we will study how economics can help to design efficient laws and to evaluate the impact of changes in legal institutions. We will cover topics such as : - Law enforcement and criminal law ; - Property law ; - Intellectual Property ; - Tort law ; - Contracts. We will present various policy applications and will study how economics can help to solve policy related problems in the light of recent academic research in the field.

Pedagogical format

The course will be based on the teacher's presentation of theory and applications. Students will be required to intervene in class to stimulate the discussion.

Course validation

Students will be graded on the basis of : 1) Class participation ; 2) A take home assignement in a form of an essay ; 3) A final exam.


Before each class we will provide students with some notes that will guide class discusssion. At the beginning of the course we will provide a list of readings.
