Course Description

The goals of the case-study are threefold: a) to re-enact some of the key challenges faced by David Cameron during 2010-2016 regarding Brexit, b) to understand and assess a political conflict through primary sources (European Council conclusions, institutional correspondence, public speeches), c) to familiarise with tools and skills commonly used for political action (writing manifestos, designing a public survey and creating political slogans and claims)

Pedagogical format

First hour of the seminar devoted to oral presentations and class discussion. Second hour of the class divided between a 30' keynote brief by lecturer (powerpoint) and 15' comparative lessons with third countries. 15' final minutes devoted to prepare following session

Course validation

Group assessment: two oral presentations (5-7') throughout the semester (30%) and one written brief about any of the 12 topics covered in the sessions (25%). Final home essay between 2200 and 2500 words (40%). Readings and participation (5%)


Before each seminar a short set of suggested readings and/or audio-visual material is indicated. Also, each student prepares twice during the semester a collective oral presentation (5-7') and one written individual brief about the topic of their choice
