The class will start by developments concerning the large metropolis, their change over time and analytical models to understand them which have been developed over time, in relation to globalised urbanisation processes. A second set of lectures deal with the question of governance and regulation of complex societies and is related to the development of various types of states and cities. The relations between states and cities, following C.Tilly, is seen as a key variable to understand the development of governance pattern in large metropolis. The sociology of the state (construction, development, crisis, failures) will be mobilised to understand the institutional and structural constraints of urban governance in large cities. The last and third theme is more related to the question of comparative urban policies and organised around urban problems.
