Course Description

This course aims at equipping future managers with management skills applicable at the local, national and international levels, whether in the public, private or non-profit sectors. These skills will enable students to analyse and understand the processes of transformation at play in their environment, as well as to elaborate and implement reforms with using all the levers of transformation: change strategy, leadership, incentives, communication, negotiation. The objective of this course is to provide an introduction to the broad set of issues associated with the management and transformation of organizations. While the course will focus on organizational, managerial and leadership issues in general as they pertain to most organizations beyond their specificities, we will also discuss the particularities of organizing, managing and leading in public administration and not-for-profit organizations. The course will explore in turn: 1. The question of the nature of organizations and organizing and recent trends in that respect 2. Some core dimensions of management pertaining to the inscriptions of individual and group dynamics in organizations, taking into account recent developments such as globalization or technological transformations. 3. The evolving conceptualization of the interface between the organization and its environment and some of its managerial consequences 4. The leadership of organizational change management and some of its challenges

Pedagogical format

The course will use a mix of pedagogical formats. Group work will be important – for each session one group will launch the discussion. Some lecturing will take place that will combine with in-class debates and discussions around the short articles. We will also have a few guest lecturers throughout the term.

Course validation

Mid-term exam: online test - 30% of the final grade Final paper - 60% of the final grade Participation - 10% of the final grade

Workload

Each session is associated with one piece of substantive reading and two to three short articles that will be used in class as mini cases for discussion. Students will be responsible, in a group project, for introducing the discussion on one of the sessions during the semester. Individually, they should also prepare two short (one page) individual notes on two other sessions of their choice. It is expected that students will be ready to discuss, during each session, the theme of the session and more particularly the ideas covered in the short articles that are used for discussion.
