Course Description

This course will cover the concept of cultural diplomacy from both a historical and practical stand point. The main scope will be French cultural diplomacy, but in the last two classes of the semester we will focus on other countries such as China, the US or Brazil to allow a comparison between various strategies. This class will allow the students to explore in a practical way how to conduct a cultural diplomacy in today's world. It will feature many case studies for instance practising how to imagine a cultural festival in a foreign country or how to build a strategy of teaching the french language around the world. At the end of the class, all students should be able to understand what is cultural diplomacy, what are its means and its objectives but also be able to take an active part in it. Here are some of the thematics that wil be tackled : Francophonie in a globalized world, Cultural goods and international crisis, French music in the World, etc.

Pedagogical format

This course will include group work, interventions from external professionnals and lecture from the teacher. The first class will allow to distribute all the exercices among students.

Course validation

3 grades : participation 10%, case study and group case.
