Course Description

This course illustrates how education contributes to the reproduction of social inequalities in western countries. On one side, we consider how social origins, gender and ethnicity shape educational proficiency as well as the level and type of final educational qualifications attained by students. On the other side, we explore how education impacts on unemployment risks, earnings, social mobility, lifestyles and partner choice. The emphasis of the course is on the interplay between micro-level mechanisms of educational inequalites, described by cultural reproduction and rational choice theories, and institutional arrangments. We thus explore how educational policies affect cross-national variations in educational inequalities and in returns to education.
